I have created a custom field with Drop Down List as the field type.
I added some the following text in the options field:
FREE
£5
But when I go the event, for that Custom field it just says Select Options and no options are available.

Hello,
I don't have any issue doing a dropdown custom fields, using exactly as options :
Could you attach a screenshot of custom field options (full) and of where you have issue with no option visible ?

Ok, i see!
On older version... before it was needed to enter value AND option (VALUE=OPTION), but since 3.6.0, i have simplify the system, so that you can just enter option (if value will be the same as the option text).
